Arrangements for Town Bus Service affected by Lilli Pilli Roadworks

Between Monday 21 June and Friday 24 September 2021 part of George Bass Drive between Grandfathers Gully Road and Denise Drive Lilli Pilli will be closed and all Town Bus Services will be diverted via Tallgums Way and Ridge Road.

Services that pick-up passengers will enter George Bass Drive at Carramar Drive and a temporary bus stop for passengers will be on the vacant block on the left side of Carramar Drive and George Bass Drive (near the 80 kph sign). Between Monday 21 June and Friday 24 September 2021 part of George Bass Drive between Grandfathers Gully Road and Denise Drive Lilli Pilli will be closed and all School Bus Services will be diverted via Tallgums Way and Ridge Road.

Services that pick-up students will enter George Bass Drive at Carramar Drive and a temporary bus stop for students attending school in Broulee will be on the vacant block on the left side of Carramar Drive and George Bass Drive (near the 80 kph sign). The normal bus stop on the southern side of George Bass Drive and Carramar Drive will not be affected for dropping off students (from all schools) and pickups for schools in Batemans Bay.

We estimate that there will only be a delay of approximately 5 minutes caused by the detour. The only exception to this is Bus 9 (S463) which may be running up to 10 minutes late for Carroll College, St Peter’s Anglican College students alighting at stops from Surf Beach into the Village Centre Batemans Bay.

Students using Lilli Pilli Road, Denis Drive and Grandfathers Gully Road bus stops will need to use the closest bus stop. In this regards they can contact Priors on ph. 44724040.

A map showing the detour routes, as well as a table detailing affected routes for individual school services is displayed separately in this section.

Slow Down to 40km When Lights Flash

Drivers should look out for children who are crossing the road or waiting to cross. Lights flash on buses to warn motorists that buses are picking up and dropping off children. By law, a driver must not overtake or pass a bus with flashing lights at more than 40km/h

Lights begin to flash when the bus stops and the doors open, and they keep flashing for about 20 seconds after the doors close. Children are most at risk in the minutes after they get off the bus.

Young children are often unpredictable in their movements. They are still developing the skills that help them to judge the direction of sound and the speed and distance of vehicles.

We know that because of their sheer size and mass, buses can cause severe outcomes for other road users in crashes. Motorists can help reduce the risk of a crash and keep children safe by:

  • Slowing down to 40km/h when bus lights are flashing
  • Looking out for children crossing the road near bus stops, in school zones or along bus routes
  • Giving way to buses when they merge back into traffic

Rural and Regional areas

Drivers must take extra care when driving past bus stops or along bus routes in rural and regional areas. Be aware of children crossing the road and slow down to 40km/h when bus lights flash. A stationary bus can impede your view of children near the bus.
