Slow down to 40 when bus lights flash

About

NSW has one of the largest bus fleets in Australia. More than 3850 buses operate in the Sydney area, while another 1000 buses service the Newcastle, Wollongong and Blue Mountains areas. In addition, more than 3000 bus services operate in rural and regional NSW.

The NSW Government is committed to working with industry and the community to improve safety around buses and is implementing a campaign targeting motorists to highlight the laws around bus flashing lights.

The Issue

Research commissioned by the Centre for Road Safety highlighted a need to improve motorists’ awareness of, and compliance with, road rules around bus flashing lights. Lights flash on the front and back of a bus when the bus is picking up or setting down school children. By law you must slow down to 40km/h when bus lights flash. When bus lights are flashing, young children are on foot around the bus. When travelling by bus, children are most at risk in the minutes after they get off the bus.
